SPAIN/ BARCELONA, The 'Rosell plan' to save football

Sandro Rosell knows that the world of professional football needs to impose some changes to face the general crisis and inequality between clubs. He touched on some of these issues at the Foundation Forum held in Barcelona.

The Barça president is in favour of collectively selling the television rights, currently amounting to €700 million, for €1,000 million, with the resulting difference of €300 million to be divided between the other teams, excluding Real Madrid and Barcelona.

The 'Big two' of Spanish football would not lose any of what they currently earn, around €140 million each, and the other teams would considerably boost their coffers with this scheme.

Another of the changes the president is considering is the number of teams playing in the First Division. His objective is to reduce them down to 18, or even 16 teams. This would involve lower costs for media operators with rights to la Liga - lower costs leading to greater profitability.

Rosell is not convinced about the creation of a European Super League. Although it would increase the level of competition, he believes that it would produce some uninspiring matches. His proposal would be to improve the current Champions League format, doubling the number of teams entering in the first groups stage.
