Chicago is terrified, the Rams have a secret weapon
(source https://www.al.com/sports/2020/10/ashawn-robinson-on-way-back-for-los-angeles-rams.html) - Defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson could be on the field for the first time for Los Angeles on Monday night, Rams coach Sean McVay said on Thursday.
The Rams placed the former Alabama All-American on reserve/non-football injury in August, which automatically sidelined him for at least the first six weeks of the season. When Los Angeles held its first practice on Thursday in preparation for its Week 7 game against the Chicago Bears, Robinson rejoined his teammates. “He’s been great,” McVay said before Thursday’s practice. “He’s done an excellent job working out with our weight coaches in the meantime. Today will represent the first true practice because we’ve only had walkthroughs up to this point throughout the week, so I know he’s excited and chomping at the bit to get out there and compete with his teammates today.”A second-round draft choice of Detroit in 2016, Robinson spent his first four NFL seasons with the Lions before signing a two-year, $17 million contract in March to join the Rams in free agency.
“The reason we brought him in when we signed him in the offseason was because he’s a player that can play on all three downs,” McVay said. “He has versatility across the front. He can play in your base. He can play in your sub packages. This is a really good football player that we expect to contribute in all of our personnel groupings, and excited to add him to the mix of the defensive line sooner than later.”
When asked when Robinson might be added to the mix, McVay said: “Could be this week.”Robinson’s return was made possible in August when the Rams and the defensive tackle’s agent worked out a way to keep Robinson from taking the COVID-19 opt-out, an option offered to NFL players during the coronavirus crisis.Robinson qualified for a medical opt-out, which would have paid him $350,000 for the 2020 season and delayed the start of his contract until 2021.
Instead, Robinson and the Rams agreed to delay the start of his contract until 2021, but instead of opting out, Robinson went on reserve/NFI while the NFL refined its coronavirus protocols.
Instead of the $350,000 payment as a medical opt-out, Robinson is getting a $500,000 base salary. But if the Rams add him to the 53-player active roster, the base salary will rise to $1 million.
That doesn’t mean Robinson will get paid $1 million for the 2020 season. But he will get a weekly check based on a $1 million salary when he joins active roster. That’s $58,823.53 per week.
But Robinson had been scheduled for a $3 million base salary in 2020, which is a weekly check during the 17 weeks of the regular season of $176,470.59.
To make up the difference if Robinson comes back to contribute, the Rams will pay the defensive tackle a $125,000 roster bonus every time he’s among the 48 players designated as game-day actives during the 2020 season.
